Could This Be the Secret To Amazing Skin?

Could this simple switch be the answer to all your skincare woes? It's been shown to improve the texture and appearance of your skin, as well as clearing out blackheads and preventing irritation when washing your face... AND you can find it at any supermarket. But is it worth trying?

Using sparkling water is the ultimate skincare hack that has been popularized by women in Japan and Korea, and is slowly making its way over to the US.

It’s sometimes referred to as the ‘sparkling water facial’ or ‘fizzy face cleanse’ and it simply consists of washing your face with sparkling water rather than the tap water you usually use. While nothing has scientifically been proven, it has been shown to have some pretty impressive benefits.

So we've done all the digging we can to find out all about the 'fizzy face cleanse' so you don't have to.

Here’s why it works

1. It has the same pH as your skin

Tap water usually has a pH of 7, whereas your skin is a 5.5.

Sparking water has the same pH (5.5) as your skin, which means that it won't dry out your dermal layers in the same way tap water will. The tight feeling you get after washing your face is the pH of the tap water aggravating your skin. This can be especially troublesome if you suffer from sensitive or naturally dry skin.

The slight acidity of the carbonated water also means that it acts as a very gentle exfoliator, too. Double whammy!

2. It helps to unclog pores

The carbonation helps break up oils, dirt and impurities which cause breakouts, so you get a deeper cleanse. Sparking water can also, because it's more acidic than tap water, gently exfoliate your skin, too.

It's been known to reduce the appearance of blackheads, making them smaller in size and less noticeable as well as causing the skin to appear tighter and brighter immediately afterwards.

3. Increases circulation

The CO2 in the water brings both blood and oxygen to the dermal layers, meaning you’ll be left with glowing skin.

Using sparkling water is a more effective way to cleanse your skin and get really break up the dirt and oils which can so easily block up your pores and cause acne. At room temperature, sparkling water is a vasodilator which means it triggers your blood vessels to open up and encourages blood flow to the skin's surface. Still water has to be heated before it has this effect. By removing dirt and encouraging a healthy blood flow, sparkling water will cause you to have a much healthier-looking complexion.

So, where do I start?

Before investing in a carbonated water machine, try washing your face with the bottled variety for a week or so, and see if you notice any difference!

Splash your face with sparkling water (or hold your breath and hold your face under water for 10 seconds). Use your normal face wash and cleansers as you would, and wash it away with carbonated water. Dab your face with a towel and finish off with a moisturizer.

If you have sensitive skin, don’t start using sparkling water every day as it might take a while for your skin to get used to it, or mix it with a 1:1 ratio with mineral water or green tea water!

Alternatively, you can use a cotton pad soaked in carbonated water and sweep it over your face, which is a slightly gentler way to incorporate it into your skincare routine.
